Exposed king
A king stripped of defenders — a magnet for tactics.
What is the exposed king?
An exposed king is one with few defenders nearby, often stuck in the centre or stripped of its pawn cover. It is less a single tactic than the condition that makes every other tactic — checks, forks, sacrifices — suddenly work.
Why the exposed king matters
King safety is the one factor that overrides material. A player up a rook with a naked king is often simply lost. Training to spot and exploit an exposed king is what turns "I have an attack" into a forced win.
How to use it to win
When the enemy king has lost its pawn shield or never castled, throw pieces at it with check after check and look for the sacrifice that keeps it from running home. Conversely, treat your own exposed king as an emergency to fix before anything else.
