Fork
One piece attacks two or more targets at once; the opponent saves only one.
What is the fork?
A fork is a double attack from a single piece. It hits two or more enemy pieces simultaneously, and since your opponent can only answer one threat per move, you walk away with the other.
Why the fork matters
Forks are the bread and butter of winning material, and the knight is the great forking piece because it jumps over everything and attacks from squares no other piece can be defended from. A huge share of all tactics — and almost every beginner's first combination — is a fork.
How to use it to win
Scan for squares from which one piece would hit two valuable targets, paying special attention to the enemy king and queen sitting a knight's leap apart. Royal forks (king plus queen) and family forks (king, queen and rook) are worth hunting actively.
A concrete example
A knight landing on c7 that forks a king on e8 and a rook on a8 is the textbook "family check" every player meets early.
