How Many Chess Puzzles Should You Do a Day?

It is the most common question I get, and the most common mistake hiding behind it. People assume improvement scales with volume: that 100 puzzles a day must beat 15. It does not.

The honest answer

For most players, 10 to 20 puzzles a day, solved properly, is the sweet spot. Solved properly is doing the heavy lifting in that sentence. Fifteen puzzles you calculate to the end and review beats fifty you click through on instinct, every time.

Why more isn’t better

Past a certain point, extra puzzles stop teaching and start training bad habits:

  • You start guessing. Volume rewards speed, and speed at the cost of calculation makes you a faster guesser, not a stronger player.
  • You stop reviewing. The learning is in understanding your misses. Nobody reviews 80 puzzles a day, so the mistakes never turn into lessons.
  • You fatigue. Tired calculation is sloppy calculation. The last 40 puzzles of a marathon teach almost nothing.

Make each puzzle count

A puzzle is a rep, and reps only build skill when done with form:

  1. Calculate to the end before moving. No “this looks right.”
  2. Check the opponent’s best defence, not just the line you want.
  3. Review every miss: was it the wrong pattern, or lazy calculation?
  4. Train at the right difficulty: hard enough to think, not so hard you guess. Roughly a 70–80% solve rate.

Consistency beats marathons

Fifteen puzzles every day for a month is worth far more than 450 in one weekend. Tactics live in long-term memory, and long-term memory is built by spacing: seeing patterns repeatedly over days, not cramming them once. A daily streak is not a gimmick; it is the mechanism.

A routine that works

  • 15 focused puzzles, calculated fully.
  • A couple of minutes reviewing whatever you missed.
  • One weak theme drilled deliberately a few times a week.

Small, sharp, daily. That is the whole secret, and it is why adaptive, daily training tends to outperform raw puzzle-grinding by a wide margin.
