Decoy (attraction)

Lure an enemy piece — often the king — onto a fatal square.

What is the decoy (attraction)?

A decoy, or attraction, drags an enemy piece onto a specific square where it can be hit. Often the target is the king itself, sacrificed onto a square where a fork, skewer or mate is waiting.

Why the decoy (attraction) matters

Decoy and deflection are mirror images: deflection pulls a piece away, decoy pulls it toward. Learning to think "what if that king were on this square?" unlocks a whole class of sacrifices that look impossible until you see the landing square.

How to use it to win

Spot a square where, if only the enemy king or queen stood there, you would have a winning fork or check. Then look for a sacrifice — a check or a juicy capture — that forces it onto that exact square.
