An in-between move that injects a bigger threat before the expected recapture.
What is the zwischenzug (in-between move)?
A zwischenzug — an "in-between move" or intermezzo — is an unexpected move inserted into an expected sequence. Instead of making the recapture your opponent is waiting for, you first play a more forcing move (usually a check or threat), then return to the plan on better terms.
Why the zwischenzug (in-between move) matters
Whole exchanges are won and lost on this idea. Players assume a trade is forced and calculate "he takes, I take" — and miss that a check in the middle flips the result. Training the in-between move makes your calculation honest.
How to use it to win
Before you automatically recapture, pause and ask if there is a more forcing move first. If a check or a stronger threat exists, play it — your opponent must respond, and you recapture afterwards, often with interest.
