Equality
Come back from a worse position and hold the balance.
What is the equality?
An equality puzzle asks you to claw back from a losing or worse position to a draw or a balanced game — a saving resource, a perpetual check, a fortress, or the precise defence that neutralises the attack.
Why the equality matters
Saving half a point from a lost position feels as good as a win and counts the same in the standings. The defensive resourcefulness this trains — refusing to lose — is one of the most underrated skills in chess.
How to use it to win
When you are worse, switch from winning to surviving: look for perpetual check, a fortress your opponent cannot break, or a forced trade into a drawn endgame. Defend actively, not passively.
