Knight endgame
Knights and pawns — close cousins of pure pawn endings.
What is the knight endgame?
A knight endgame has only knights and pawns. The famous rule is that knight endings are like pawn endings: the king and passed pawns dominate, and the knight is a short-range blockader that struggles against pawns on both wings.
Why the knight endgame matters
Because knight endings behave so much like pawn endings, the same precise techniques — opposition-style king play, passed-pawn races — decide them. Knowing that connection lets you calculate them with confidence.
How to use it to win
Treat the position like a pawn ending with a helper: push and support passed pawns, activate the king, and use the knight to blockade or to win key pawns. Beware passed pawns on opposite wings, the knight's great weakness.
