Smothered mate
A knight mates a king its own pieces have hemmed in completely.
What is the smothered mate?
Smothered mate is delivered by a lone knight when the enemy king is so crowded by its own army that it cannot move at all. The knight gives check, and because every flight square is occupied by a friendly piece, the king simply has nowhere to go.
Why the smothered mate matters
It is the most satisfying mate in chess and a genuine practical weapon, especially when a stray knight suddenly becomes decisive. The maneuver behind it — the famous queen sacrifice that forces the king into the corner — trains your eye for forcing sequences in general.
How to use it to win
The recipe is old and reliable: a knight check on f7, the king flees to the corner, a queen sacrifice on g8 drags the rook in front of its own king, and the knight returns to f7 for mate. The trigger is an enemy king already short of squares with its own rook nearby.
