Tactical motifs
Attacking f2 / f7
The weakest square in the opening — guarded only by the king.
What is the attacking f2 / f7?
The f2 and f7 squares (in front of each king) are defended by nothing but the king at the start of the game. Tactics that target them — a bishop and knight crashing through, a sacrifice to drag the king out — exploit that built-in weakness.
Why the attacking f2 / f7 matters
More games are lost in the opening to an f7 disaster than to anything else. Knowing the attacking patterns lets you punish careless development as White and avoid getting wrecked as Black.
How to use it to win
Watch for an enemy bishop on c4 eyeing f7 together with a knight ready to jump to g5 or e5. The Fried Liver and Légal's mate are the model attacks; defensively, never leave f7/f2 propped up by the king alone for too long.
